Happy New Year, 2G Families! We had an amazing first full week. Students began several new studies and...filled up their Community Cube Jar. Way to go, 2G! Please enjoy these additional highlights:
Math: It's time to tell time! Mathematicians learned how to tell time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, and to the exact minute. We had so much fun connecting analog and digital clocks. Students ended the week with a, "Match the clock" game to test our skills. Ask your mathematician to tell you what time it is. We'll be learning about duration of time inner next lessons as we think about activities that last about an hour vs. those that only last a few minutes.
Reading: Readers are doing a wonderful job reading their mysteries in guided reading group. Detectives are keeping track of clues, characters, and new vocabulary in their detective logs. Students also worked together to look up new mystery words in dictionaries. We are learning to put definitions into our own words. Some of our favorites are: "sleuth", "gumshoe", "evidence", "thief", "disguise", and "suspicious".
Read Aloud: Mrs. Gomes read three beautiful books by Allen Say, Kamishibai Man, Grandfather's Journey, and Tea With Milk. These were chosen for the ending of our Japan study as they all include Allen's reflections on his own life that incorporated a love of both Japanese and American culture.
Writing Workshop: Students published their second book this week! I was blown away by their attention to detail in their stories and thoughtful dedications. Writers had opportunities to read their stories to one another and provide positive feedback to their buddies.
Science: Scientists began a Nutrition study. We are focusing on balanced meals while we learn about the five food groups. We are also learning that being healthy includes being active. It is recommended that children at this stage exercise for 60 minutes a day. We'll be tracking our activities next week!
Computers: During computer time, students read a story and answered follow-up questions on Raz-Kids. We love reading these books and Mrs. Gomes reminded us that readers don't just read the words, we THINK about what we are reading. Afterward, we did a word building activity in, "Create a Word". The link to this phonics game is on our site.
Have a wonderful weekend.
