Nouns, verbs, and adjectives, oh my! 2G Detectives hunted for these types of words this week in their guided reading books and in the classroom. They did an amazing job and we are learning to use these to help build super sentences when we write stories. Please enjoy these additional highlights of our week:
Math: Mathematicians used hundreds boards to focus on adding and subtracting multiples of 10. This is an important skill to build to help us solve given problems efficiently. We also continued our work on place value and we made, "Math Creatures"! It was so much fun to create something using blocks of 100, 10, and 1. These will be on display in our hallway for all to enjoy.
Writing Workshop: Writers are learning about similes and how to incorporate them into our writing. 2Gers did a great job creating some of their own: "I was as hot as magma", "It was as cold as an iceberg", and "It was as steep as a cliff". They are knocking my socks off!
Literacy: Readers continue to learn about context clues in guided reading groups. We are having great discussions about the "main idea" of a given chapter/text. In addition, we learned a new center this week: "Games Center". Our first game is "Go Cart Sight Word Rally". In this game, readers are practicing reading certain sigh words as a they race around a board. Then, they are responsible for determining where each sight word should be used in given sentences on their individual game sheets. Beep! Beep!
Social Studies: Students began creating a Venn diagram comparing traditional Japanese homes and our homes. Ask your 2Ger to show you how a Venn diagram works! Geographers also learned about a new type of map - a resource map. It was so interesting to learn about what types of things come from land in different areas of our country.
Read Aloud: For the next few weeks we'll be reading winter and holiday themed picture books during snack time. A fan favorite this week was, The Gingerbread Pirates by Kristin Kladstrup.
Have a wonderful weekend.
