Detectives had a wonderful week in 2-G! We have worked together each morning to figure out what is in our mystery box. Mrs. Gomes gives us three clues - she tries to stump us, but has been unsuccessful thus far! Some of mystery box objects this week were: a dry erase marker, scissors, and a tissue. Please enjoy these additional highlights of our studies:
Math: Mathematicians focused on developing our subtraction strategies this week. We are learning to take away parts from a whole number. For example:
86 - 24 = ___
86 - 20 = 66
66 - 4 = 62
We also learned TWO new math games for math stations! "Biggest and Smallest" stretches our math brains and requires mathematicians to use both addition and subtraction strategies. We are using the terms, "sum" and "difference". "Close to 100" was a favorite. In this game, students used mental math to add two double-digit numbers. Way to go!
Literacy: Detectives started reading mystery books from a number of different series in guided reading groups. We are reading, Cam Jansen, Meg Mackintosh, Nate the Great, A-Z Mysteries, and Pup and Hound books. While we read, 2-Gers are recording important information in their own Detective Logs. We also learned a new game for "Game Center" called, "Diamond Island - A Capitalization Game". Ask your reader to tell you all about it!
Social Studies: Students practiced using chopsticks this week in our Japan study. We also learned about Haiku poetry and got to write our own. This poetry is composed of three lines and follows this pattern: line 1 has 5 syllables, line 2 has 7 syllables, and line 3 has 5 syllables. In computer time, we got to explore the website, "Kids Web Japan". This is an amazing resource for learning all about this incredible country. On Friday, we had a beautiful share from a student that included pottery and Japanese woodblock art.
Fundations: 2-Gers learned about the glued sounds, "ong", "ing", "ang", and "ung". We discovered that these glued sounds are usually found at the end of base words. Some of this week's spelling words included, "strong", "wrong", "hung", "clang", and "bring".
Read Aloud: We have been having a ball listening to several stories in the "Tacky the Penguin" series by Helen Lester. So far we've read: Tacky the Penguin, Tacky and the Emperor, and Tacky's Christmas.
Enjoy your weekend!
