Happy December, Everyone! 2G had another amazing week. In connection with our new Mystery study, we started a new activity in morning meeting - "Mystery Box"! Mrs. Gomes gives us 3 clues about what is inside and we have to use our detective skills to figure out what it is. Friday morning's clues were: 1. I can make things disappear 2. I can come in different shapes, sizes, and colors and 3. I get smaller when you use me. Can you guess what it is? Please enjoy these additional highlights of our week.
Fundations: Detectives went on a word hunt this week. We learned about nouns and hunted for them in our guided reading books. We found so many! Next week, we'll hunt for verbs and adjectives.
Literacy: Readers have been doing an incredible job building their fluency skills in Literacy Centers. We are learning to read many non-fiction texts in both our guided reading groups and our science and social studies centers. A big goal for all 2Gers is to use context clues to help determine the meanings of new words.
Math: Mathematicians worked on connecting numbers and words this week. For example:
one hundred twelve = 112. Some of the tricker numbers really make us think about place value such as: one hundred nine = 109. Students have been learning how to solve problems most efficiently. We are asking students to focus on their ones, tens, and hundreds when solving math problems. Here is an example of an addition strategy and a subtraction strategy we've learned:
42 + 35 = ____ 56 - 23 = _____
40 + 30 = 70 56 - 20 = 36
2 + 5 = 7 36 - 3 = 33
70 + 7 = 77
Social Studies: Flat Stanley has helped us learn so much! Last week we received a record, 8 pieces of mail from our friend, Flat Stanley. We are having a ball learning about many different places in the world. Mrs. Gomes will be posting our letters/postcards from Flat Stanley's adventures on our bulletin board.
Read Aloud: Every day at snack time Mrs. Gomes reads a book to the class. This week we listened to several stories about our favorite pig, Olivia. These stories are great tools to look for patterns/connections between texts. In addition, we have been talking about the wonders of using our imaginations - as Olivia always does.
Have a wonderful weekend!
