We are so thankful! The first and second graders ended the week with an incredible Thanksgiving Feast in our cafeteria that became our banquet hall. It was such a wonderful morning of chatting with friends, eating super delicious food, and giving thanks for all that we have. All students put a great deal of effort into preparing for our event. 2G was in charge of: 1. Weaving placemats 2. Rolling 160 bundles of silverware 3. Baking 200 chocolate chip cookies (scrumptious!) and 4. Creating centerpieces. Our class created origami turkeys in connection with our Japan study. They are beautiful! All students also learned and recited our traditional Thanksgiving poem by Ivy O. Eastwick. A copy of this poem is on the back of each child's placemat. Please enjoy these additional highlights of our studies:
Math: Mathematicians learned to add and subtract Base Ten Blocks this week. We love how efficiently we can solve problems by focusing on putting together or taking hundreds, tens, and ones apart. Ask your mathematician to show you how it works! Next week, we'll learn how to solve a cross number puzzle with 2 and 3-digit numbers.
Literacy: Readers explored a new activity in Word Work center. We are creating "Word Stars" where the center of a star has a word beginning such as, "br" and the points have word endings such as, "ight", "ing", "own". On Wednesday we learned about our new, "Partner Reading" center! This is similar to a reader's theatre where buddies take turns reading given scripts/plays. We focus on using intonation in conversation and listening carefully two what our partner has said. Mrs. Gomes read us the book, You Read to Me and I'll Read to You, by Mary Ann Hoberman. This book is full of fun short stories that helped us practice. 2Gers brought some of these stories home to share.
Fundations: This week we learned about our friend, Alfie the Apostrophe. He helps us with contractions! We'll continue to explore contractions through next week. We agreed that one of the trickiest words is, "won't" because the first word from the smaller parts, "will + not" has to be changed!
Social Studies: We read a folktale entitiled, "Mr. Lucky Straw" in our Japan packet. In this story, a boy named, Shobei goes on a long walk and meets people along his journey. He trades with others for things they "need" and things they "want". 2G had a wonderful discussion about what the differences between "needs" and "wants" and how these relate to our own lives.
I'm so proud of all of our wonderful accomplishments this week!
Enjoy your weekend.
