Week of 10/23-10/27

10/27/2017

What an amazing week! Each morning, we wake up our bodies and minds with exercises and energizers. Ask your 2Ger to tell you about some of our favorites: "Shark Attack", "Tony Chestnut", "The Button Factory", and "M.I.M. (Motion in the Morning)". Please enjoy these highlights of our studies:
Math: Mathematicians were busy stretching our brains.  This week we learned how to use an "open number line" to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. We also practiced estimating and learned how to use what we already know about quantity to help us complete given assignments.
Fundations:  Our patterns this week were: "ow", "oa", and "oe".  One of our favorite new ways to practice our spelling words in, "Fundations sentences" where we create our own sentences.  We are working on sentence structure and next week we'll be learning an activity called, "Cut and Grow" where we cut our sentences and add in new details!
Literacy: Readers learned 3 new centers in Literacy this week. In Listening Center we all got to hear the story, Miss Nelson is Missing. In Science Center we observed the millipedes and beetles in our rotting log bin.  Last, but not least, we worked on our stories in Writing Center.
Science: 2Gers completed idea webs entitled, "What do scientists do?".  We are learning about different types of tools scientists might use when observing things. A favorite part of science was watching a Brainpopjr. movie with Annie and Moby about observations.  There is always a joke at the end and the most recent joke was, Q: "How do you make your dessert bigger?"
A: "Look at it through a magnifying glass!"
Read Aloud:  At snack time, we had a ball listening to 3 books by Doreen Cronin, Diary of a Worm, Diary of a Spider, and Diary of a Fly.  We learned about the different points of view each main character has.
Computers: On Friday we explored math games on our laptops.  We tried out 5 games that help us practice skip counting, using a number line, sequencing, and adding multiple numbers.  A favorite was, "Addition Pyramid".
Community Cube Jar Party:  Wow!  2Gers worked cooperatively to create forts in our classroom.  It was an incredible sight!  We had a blast doing fun packets together. We even ended our party with some dancing from GoNoodle.  2G can't wait to fill up our jar again soon!
Have a wonderful weekend.
