Buddies and nests, oh my! We had an amazing week in the second grade. The weather was perfect on our nature walk and we had a blast with our buddies. Scientists made wonderful observations in their journals and collected materials to make bird nests. On Thursday, we had to think like birds and use tweezers to create our own nests. It was tricky! We talked about the incredible skills birds have that help them build such works of art. I am so proud of the teamwork and kind words 2Gers used during their partner work! Please enjoy these additional highlights of our studies:
Math: Mathematicians focused on "greater than" and "less than" this week. We practiced reading number sentences left to right - helping us choose the correct symbol for each problem. In addition, we learned a game called, "Seven Up" in math stations. 2Gers are building fluency and using combinations of 10 to add multiple numbers in a clear, quick, and organized way. Our math focus word is: "efficient"!
Literacy: Readers are doing a wonderful job in Literacy Centers. We learned how to do the "Social Studies Center" on Monday. Students got to work on words maps and explore our new atlases. 2Gers were excited to see the crossover between curricular areas! All readers are working on reading carefully in our Guided Reading groups and attending to punctuation appropriately.
Writing Workshop: We started our first, "Small Moments" stories! Writers knocked my socks off once again with their determination. We learned the power of writing a meaningful story from a "Master writer", Angela Johnson in her book, The Leaving Morning. Mrs. Gomes showed us that even the smallest parts of our day can become amazing stories. She wrote about having breakfast in the morning and she filled up so many pages! Writers worked very hard to add more details and make their stories come to life.
Fundations: This week we focused on bonus letters, "f", "l", and "s". We learned that when a word ends in a short vowel + one of these letters, it gets a bonus letter! Some of our study words were: "stuff", "dress", "spill", and "cliff".
Have a wonderful weekend.
