Congratulations, 2Gers! We filled up our Community Cube Jar! Our class voted on special type of party to celebrate our accomplishment and we'll be having....(drum roll)... a pajama/stuffed animal/fort party! We'll have our party next week and Mrs. Gomes will send out more details soon. Please enjoy these highlights of our studies:
Math: The action of subtraction! Mathematicians did an amazing job working on subtraction story problems this week. We are learning to show our problem solving and to choose efficient strategies. One challenge was learning to leave the first number whole and break up the second number into pieces. Ask your mathematician to show you! We also played 2 new math station games to help us with our skills: "Cover Up" and "What's the Story?".
Writing Workshop: Writers are helping one another elaborate in our stories. Our focus this week was imagining we had magnifying glasses to help us see details in each sentence. If we couldn't see them, we had to add them! Next week, we'll practice peer editing and start our work on Synonyms.
Fundations: Fundations Friends studied the diphthongs: "oi" and "oy". We learned that "oy" almost always goes at the end of a word, except when it precedes a vowel such as in, "joyous". Today, students brought home a packet of all of their spelling words they've studied thus far. Ask your child to tell you about the different patterns they've explored.
Literacy: We are working hard in all Guided Reading groups to read each word carefully in our books and to refrain from omitting or inputting small words that do not belong. In addition, all readers are learning to use context to determine the meaning of new vocabulary. In our "Phone Center" students reread the books we've read in group to themselves to help build fluency and reinforce skills that were taught.
Science: We have new friends in 2G: millipedes, beetles, mites, and rolly pollies! Scientists began our study of rotting logs and soil this week. Our big questions are: "What is soil?" and "Where does soil come from?". We have a small, rotting log habitat in our room where we get to watch these creatures in action. Students took observation journals outside and looked carefully at the wonders beneath their feet.
Have a wonderful weekend!
