We had a wonderful week in 2-G! We were so excited to welcome a new student to our classroom family on Wednesday. Now we have 20 2-Gers! It has been such a joy to learn more about one another each day. Please enjoy these highlights of our studies:
Literacy: We have been exploring Tomie dePaola's Strega Nona books. We love learning about the many ways she can use her magic. Her friend, Big Anthony has made us laugh as he always seems to get into trouble! These are the titles of the books we've enjoyed so far: Strega Nona, Strega Nona Her Story, Strega Nona's Magic Lessons, Strega Nona Takes a Vacation, Strega Nona's Harvest, Big Anthony His Story, Strega Nona Does it Again, and Brava! Strega Nona (a pop-up book). We completed many wonderful activities in response to our readings that we will bring home to share soon!
Writing Workshop: After Mrs. Gomes read us the book, When I Grow Up I Want to be Me, by Sandra Magsamen, we wrote about what we hope to be. 2-G is certainly filled with incredible talent. You'll be able to enjoy our first piece of writing on our bulletin board next week.
Fundations: Students practiced using digraphs each day in our Fundations (phonics) study. We created words using our magnet boards and learned to tap them out - one tap for each sound. Next week, we'll practice doing spelling homework with 10 words that contain digraphs.
Math: Mathematicians learned about growing patterns and repeating patterns. Students explored several types of patterns and learned how to identify each one. We also had the opportunity to create our own! 2-Gers went on a pattern hunt in our classroom...try going on a hunt at home!
Science: Scientists completed our first observational drawing and we knocked Mrs. Gomes's socks off! Students were given pressed leaves to observe with a magnifying glass. After looking at all of the details, scientists drew their leaves in observation journals. We learned to include labels in our drawings, as well. The last step of our leaf observation was to match our leaves with Mrs. Gomes's leaf identification chart. We found out that our class had a lot of types of Maple and Oak leaves.
Spanish: Señora Trach played "Categorias" with us this week. In this game, one person announces a category such as, "fruits". Then, students have to take turns saying a fruit they can think of in Spanish. When we got stuck, we chose a new category. It was such a great challenge and so much fun!
