Happy October! I am so proud of our 2-Gers. We are quickly filling up our Community Cube Jar as a result of all of our great efforts and teamwork. We ended the week by meeting our newest members of 2-G...millipedes, pill bugs, and beetles! Our new friends are inside our classroom terrarium with pieces of a rotting log. We'll be observing the many changes that occur inside of our terrarium over the next couple of months. Please enjoy these additional highlights of our studies:
Literacy: Centers are in full swing! We have had such a wonderful time meeting in Guided Reading groups. Some of the skills we focused on this week were: using intonation as we read, pausing at commas, reading from top to bottom (including captions), and using context to determine meaning.
Writing Workshop: Writers began our Small Moments writing. Students are learning to choose one moment/memory they'd like to share and stretch it out into a story. We were inspired by the beautiful writing by Jane Yolen in, Owl Moon. Mrs. Gomes shared an example using her story about her "Oatmeal Disaster" at breakfast.
Math: Mathematicians learned how to use "greater than" and "less than" symbols in problem solving. We loved the challenge of trying to determine which way our "greedy alligator" would face! Mathematicians worked on finding the value of one side of an equation at a time.
Social Studies: Flat Stanley! Mrs. Gomes read the story, Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown to the class last week. We are beginning our own Flat Stanley adventure inspired by the book. Geographers wrote letters to a friend/family member whom they'd like to send a letter to. Recipients will be asked to send our class a postcard that includes descriptions about where they live. We are so excited to send Flat Stanley on his way and to learn more about the world around us!
Class Meeting: Every two weeks we have Class Meeting in 2-G. This is a time where we talk about being our personal best and celebrating differences and similarities. This week the focus of our discussion was, "We are all welcome here". 2-Gers showed such wonderful respect for their peers. Way, to go!
Enjoy your week.
