We had a spectacular week in 2-G that included a beautiful nature walk. The weather could not have been more perfect! On Thursday, Second Graders explored the environment along Leverett Pond. We made several observational drawings in our journals. Buddies collected items to create their own birds' nests back at school. We found so many treasures! On Friday, students had to think like birds and create their own nest models with their "beaks" (tweezers). Our nests are on display for you to enjoy in the school library. Ask your 2-Ger to tell you about how birds build nests and what materials they use to make them. Enjoy these additional highlights of our studies:
Literacy: Literacy Centers are in full swing. This week we learned how to do our "Making Words" center. Mrs. Gomes thinks of a mystery word then mixes up all of its letters. Students are challenged with coming up with several smaller words that can be made with the given letters. At the end, we try to determine what the original mystery word is. We loved seeing how words build upon one another. For example: "or" to "corn" to "acorn".
Writing Workshop: We learned how to be buddy editors. 2-Gers worked in pairs to share our small moments stories (works in progress). We read them to our buddies, then our buddies practiced saying an "I wonder..." statement. These talks helped us add details to make our stories come to life even more!
Math: Mathematicians learned how to Play, "Close to 20". This is a fun math game where the winner actually has the lowest score. Students use a combination of 3 number cards to get a sum that is as close to 20 as possible. The score is how far you are from our target number. We had a blast using our adding strategies and building our fact fluency. We continue to work on efficiency in adding number strings in our math stations with Mrs. Gomes. Mathematicians are focusing on finding combinations to make multiples of 10 when there are several numbers to add together at once.
Social Studies: Geographers are learning more about the kinds of information we can get from maps. This week we learned how to use map keys. We also explored a natural resource map that showed us where many things come from in the United States.
Enjoy your week!
