Week of September 16th - 20th

9/19/2013

Happy Week #2!  We have had an incredible start to the year in 2-G. Please enjoy these highlights of our week:
Morning Meeting:  We are off and running with our morning meeting routines.  A very special segment that began this week was student shares. We had wonderful shares that helped us get to know members of our community in new ways. We also greet one another each morning in a different language. Ask your child to tell you some of the new ways he/she learned to say, "Good morning"!
Collages:  I am so proud of all of the thought that students put into their "About Me Collages".  2-Gers presented them on Tuesday and they will be hung up on our classroom walls for all to enjoy throughout the year.  We love to celebrate all of the things that make us special!
Literacy:  We have been engaging in an author study of the incredible, Patricia Polacco.  As we explored her books, students learned to make text to text connections, text to self connections, and to think beyond the text.  In addition, we began introducing our literacy centers.  This is a main component of our studies during literacy time.  Students learned about our : "Independent Reading Center", "Buddy Reading Center", "Big Books Center", and "Read Around the Room" center.
Math:  Mathematicians have been exploring number lines and number sentences this week. We are learning how to use number lines appropriately to help solve given addition and subtraction problems.
Social Studies:  Bird's Eye Views!  2-G began exploring maps.  We are learning what the differences are between maps and photographs.  In future lessons, students will be focusing on where we live in relation to the rest of the world.
Computer Lab:  We had our first computer lab session this week!  Students explored our class website as well as other sites offered for second graders on our school wiki page.  We are looking forward to our next computer time on Tuesday!
Writing Workshop:  Writers learned how to be, "ready to write", focusing on posture, paper positioning, and pencil grips.  We began our handwriting lessons by practicing our uppercase letters.  Students learned to start forming all letters from the top.
I thank you for your support and wish you all a wonderful weekend!
