Twigs and leaves and feathers, oh my! We had an amazing week in 2-G that was topped off with our second grade nature walk. On Thursday, 2-G scientists went on a beautiful walk to Leverett Pond. We had many opportunities to sketch things we observed in our observation journals. In addition, students and their partners collected items they thought they would need to build their own bird nests. On Friday, partners used tweezers (bird beaks), the materials they collected, and mud to create nests. We had a ball while we discovered how incredible birds' skills truly are! I am so proud of all of the incredible thinking students shared as well as the teamwork they exhibited throughout our study.
Please enjoy these additional highlights of our studies:
Literacy: Readers were introduced to our Poetry Center this week. Students are given a poem that connects to our curriculum studies. These poems are glued inside of our poetry notebooks. After reviewing them with the class, students write down the things they picture in their minds as they read the poem. They then have a chance to include an illustration of what they pictured bringing the poetry to life. Our guided reading groups are also in full swing. We are focusing on reading carefully and self-correcting when needed. In addition, we are learning about different types of print and how our voices can change accordingly when reading aloud.
Math: Mathematicians completed their first chapter! We began chapter two, focusing on mastering sums of 10 and comparing numbers. This week, we learned how to use the signs for "greater than" and "less than". We refer to these as "the greedy duck" whose mouth always opens toward the larger number (more to eat!).
Computer Lab: Students practiced logging on to their Raz-Kids accounts. They were so excited to start reading their stories! I reminded the class how important it is to answer the follow-up questions for each book.
Fundations: Our pattern this week was bonus letters, "ff", "ll", and "ss". Students worked hard to learn our new vocabulary words. Ask your child to tell you how bonus letters work!
Enjoy your week.
