2G had an amazing week! Please enjoy these highlights of our studies:
Literacy: Students did an incredible job reading through the second grade core book, The Big Balloon Race. We learned many new vocabulary words and discussed their meaning in context. Ask your reader to tell you about these words:
aloft, stowaway, aeronaut, altimeter, and heroine.
Math: Congrats, 2G! Mathematicians completed Chapter 2, focusing on the number 10. We are focusing on the patterns we see when we count by 10's starting at any given number. Example: 12, 22, 32, 42. Students are learning that the first number changes, but the second remains the same. Next week, we'll be elaborating on this concept when we introduce place value.
Science: Scientists worked in pairs to design a track that would make a ball roll more slowly (creating terrain that would have more friction). They did a wonderful job brainstorming and using tin foil, sand paper, and cotton balls to design an appropriate model. Way to go!
Writing Workshop: Writers are learning to add detail in their stories to help create a picture in the reader's mind. We are emphasizing the idea that writing is a process. Students learned the saying, "When you are done, you've just begun". This saying relates to the introduction to self editing and putting our best efforts into our writing!
Tree Observations: On Monday, 8th grade students guided us through tree observations. We sketched the very tree that this class helped to plant when they were in kindergarten!
Enjoy your week.
