Happy New Year, 2G! I was thrilled to see my smiling faces on Wednesday. Although it was a short week, we began several exciting new studies in our classroom. We also welcomed our newest member of 2G, Ms. Murphy! Ms. Murphy is our full-time student teacher from Boston College. We are so excited to have her with us. Please enjoy these highlights of our week:
Math: Time to....tell time! Mathematicians have learned to tell time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour. We studied both analog and digital clocks. We also learned ways to help us remember which hand is the hour hand and which one is the minute hand. The word ,"hour" is shorter, thus it is the shorter hand. The word ,"minute" is longer, for a longer hand! We'll be working on telling time to the minute next week. Ask your mathematician to help you tell time!
Literacy: We began a favorite unit in 2G - Biographies! Students learned what a biography is and what types of information these stories contain. We began our study with an exploration of 4 different biographies about Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Barack Obama, and Mia Hamm. Students love learning true facts about the lives of these special people. On Monday, readers will get to choose a person whom they would like to study for a biography project.
Writing Workshop: We are experts about many things in 2G. Our new writing study focuses on "All About Books". Students get to choose something they know a lot about as their story topic. This is an introduction to writing a chapter book where writers separate their information into small chapters. We are learning to organize our thinking as we teach others about what we know.
Social Studies: Students learned to count to 10 in Japanese. We even completed a math activity using the new words we learned! 2Gers are working in groups to research different aspects of the Japanese culture (ie: homes, clothing, food, etc.) Groups will be creating posters this week to display what they've learned.
Enjoy your week!
