Our hot air balloons are flying in 2D! Students finished painting their balloons in celebration of The Big Balloon Race. They are hanging in our cubby area and they are fantastic. Come on in and take a look! Enjoy more highlights of our fabulous week:
Math: The "Mission of Addition" and the "Action of Subtraction"! This week mathematicians learned to add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers horizontally. We focused on using place value to group numbers more easily. Next week, we'll be learning how to add and subtract vertically. Developing multiple strategies for problem solving will help improve our overall number sense a great deal.
Literacy: Readers learned to look at their books in a new way as they were introduced to several Literature Circle jobs. Students were in charge of being "Bridge Builders", "Question Creaters", and "Sharers". These jobs required readers to look beyond the literal text in front of them and connect to the content more personally.
Science: Scientists experimented with air friction this week. Given a marble, feather, and filled balloon, students were asked to predict which would fall to the ground fastest when dropped from the same height. 2D scientists are doing an amazing job of building on knowledge from previous experiments. Great job!
Social Studies: This was our last week of our formal geography unit in 2D. Geographers learned about 2 additional kinds of maps: weather maps and national park/campground maps. We know how to use map keys to help navigate! Next week we'll begin our country study of Japan. After the students left on Friday, we received our first letter from Flat Stanley....I can't wait to share it on Monday!
Fundations: Teams with "o" was our focus this week. Students worked with words containing "oa", "oe", "ow", "oo", "ou". We know so much about how to put sounds together!
We are so excited for Character Dress Up Day!!!
Have a great week.
