Fundations: Vowel teams! This week we learned how to use the teams, "oi", and "oy". Mrs. Gomes gave us some pretty tricky words for spelling, but we were up for the challenge! We'll be studying vowel teams for the next few weeks. We are having so much fun learning the rules for when/how to use them. Such a joy.
Literacy: Readers began two new centers in Literacy time: "Big Books" and "Listening Center". 2-Gers are doing an incredible job focusing on their center work and building skills in Guided Reading with Mrs. Gomes. We all continue to work on using intonation, helping characters come to life. In addition, Guided Reading groups are exploring the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts.
Math: Mathematicians took a vacation to the Number Line Hotel this week. Our hotel is based on a hundred board. We explored what happens when we add ten or subtract ten to any number (moving up and down floors). This is helping us build our fluency and mental math skills. We also learned about estimation. 2-Gers practiced using a new math station called, "Enough for the class". In this station, we estimate how many cubes are in a given bag, then use an efficient counting strategy to check our thinking.
Writing Workshop: We are completing our very first small moments stories in second grade. We have been working on them for a while as we learned that it takes time and effort to incorporate details and use our best handwriting. Mrs. Gomes stopped wearing socks because 2-Gers constantly knock them off!
Social Studies: Flat Stanley is on his way! Geographers continue to build our mapping skills. This week we began filling in a world map. So far, we've added all of the continents and next week we'll focus on bodies of water. We can't wait until we get our first Flat Stanley postcard to mark on our maps.
Science: Scientist met the Royal Food Family on Friday. We loved getting to know, "King Henry the Egg", "Queen Anna Banana", "Princess Peapod", "Prince Waffle", and "Sir Milkford the Scholar". This family will be helping us learn about nutritious foods and how they help us stay healthy. Ask your scientist to tell you about
Enjoy your week.
