Suffixes, compound words, and capitals, oh, my! We had an amazing week in 2D that included a wonderful performance on Thursday. Students learned a great deal about taking care of our environment from an Art Barn performance about recycling. Here are additional highlights of our week:
Literacy: One of the last lessons of our Big Balloon Race study focused on compound words. Students went on a word hunt in given chapters. Ask your child to search for compound words in the books they read at home during the week. We celebrated the conclusion of our study with a paper mache hot air balloon project on Friday. It was a gooey good time! We'll paint our balloons on Monday and they'll be on display soon.
Math: Mathematicians continued to investigate place value and regrouping. We'll be using what we've learned about place value to help solve addition and subtraction problems in the upcoming weeks. Students will learn to first solve problems horizontally, then vertically.
Fundations: Suffixes! Students focused on the suffixes, "-ing", "-ed", "-er", and "-est" this week. Our Fundations lessons always include 3 components: Visual introduction, Oral practice, and Written expression. Students are doing an amazing job!
Science: How do you give a boat more power? Students used balloons to experiment with the force of air to move the boats they'd created. This week concluded our motion in water section of our study. The final chapter of this unit focused on motion in air....we're soaring to new heights!
Social Studies: Geographers learned to identify borders between states as well as state capitals. We continue to practice using the cardinal directions to locate specific places on our maps. Flat Stanley is on his way and we can't wait to hear from him.
Computers: Students created "Word Clouds" about themselves in the computer lab. This is a wonderful sight for brainstorming, categorizing, and practicing describing words. This site can be accessed through the Lincoln School wiki page for grade 2. It is listed under the "Language Arts" column on the right.
Hats off to 2D! Have an excellent week.
