Literacy: Students have been doing an incredible job working on their final drafts of their biographies. We've met the challenge of organizing facts about a special person's life into a story with complete sentences. In addition, readers have been learning about other influential people in history. We are completing Venn Diagrams that show their similarities and differences.
Math: Mathematicians are concluding a study of polygons, symmetry, and area. 2D did a wonderful job identifying specific aspects of shapes and recreating them in given problems. We loved using mirrors to see reflections of polygons! Challenge your mathematician to find the lines of symmetry in specific objects. Next week, we'll begin a unit that will focus on adding and subtracting to get to 100.
Science: Scientists have been researching their chosen rain forest animals. They are now creating a life size picture of each animal with fur, feathers, scales, etc. to help them come to life! We are continuing our connection with our partner school in Ecuador. We recently completed a science video where students explained what we do to take care of our environment at the Lincoln School. Our friends in Ecuador will send us a video that talks about what they do to take care of the rain forest.
Social Studies: This week, 2D learned about the Maya and the Aztec civilizations in ancient Mexico. Ms. Dungan shared items that she brought back from Mexico as well as pictures showing the temple at Chichen Itza. Students learned about the great accomplishments that these two groups made, as well as many aspects of their daily lives and traditions. 2D was so excited to learn about the ancient game of "Pok-a-Tok" as well as the Mayan codices ( acordian style books with hieroglyphs).
Special Guest: Ms. Dungan and the S.A.I.L. group at Lincoln have been finding ways for our school to stay connected with our sister school in Haiti. The Kapen school has become dear to our hearts as we have to them. The education director of Haiti came to Lincoln School this week to speak to parents about the state of education there and what we can do to help. After the presentation, Jean Denis Lys (director) visited our classroom! 2D previously sent drawings to the Kapen School and we recieved a special "thank you" from Jean for our efforts. :)
Have a wonderful week!
